Five Things That Happen When You Skip the Trim
- 1 Excessive sooting. A long wick produces a larger, unstable flame that releases black carbon into the air — and onto your walls, jars, and furniture. That dark ring forming inside your candle jar? Wick too long.
- 2 Tunneling. A wick that burns too hot creates an uneven melt pool, carving a tunnel down through the center and leaving wasted wax clinging to the sides of the jar — inches of fragrance you'll never get to enjoy.
- 3 Shortened burn time. Counterintuitively, burning hotter burns faster. A properly trimmed wick creates a slower, more controlled flame that extends your candle's life by hours.

Before the first burn: Check the wick length before you ever light. Most candles ship with a wick around ½ inch — trim to ¼ inch before that inaugural flame.
Between every burn: Let the wax fully solidify and cool to room temperature before trimming. Never trim a warm or liquid wax pool — the debris has nowhere to go except into your melt pool.
What to look for: The ideal wick is straight, clean-tipped, and about ¼ inch tall. If you see a black mushroom cap, carbon buildup, or a bent wick, trim it and remove the debris before relighting.
One more thing: If your flame ever climbs above an inch or begins flickering significantly, extinguish it, let it cool, and trim before relighting. Your candle is telling you something.
