Wickless Candle Care Guide: How to Use Flame-Free Fragrance

A wickless candle is a jar of scented wax without a wick. Set it on a compatible candle warmer and gentle heat releases fragrance without lighting a flame. At Autumn Laurel & Co.®, I hand-pour wickless candles in Christiansburg, Virginia, using apricot coconut wax and clear glass tumblers inspired by the scents and stories of Appalachia.

Our wickless candles are designed for warmer use only. A candle warmer is required and sold separately; always check the warmer manufacturer's instructions and vessel compatibility.

How does a wickless candle work?

A compatible warmer heats the jar and melts the scented wax. Because there is no wick to light, the wax remains in the vessel while its fragrance gradually fades with use. The strength and duration of scent vary by fragrance, warmer and room.

How to use your wickless candle

  1. Choose a warmer designed for jar candles and check that the tumbler fits and is compatible with its heating method.
  2. Set the warmer on a stable surface, away from anything that could be damaged by heat, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Place the wickless tumbler on the warmer. Allow time for the wax to warm and release fragrance.
  4. Turn the warmer off after use. Let the glass and wax cool before touching or moving the candle.

Never light a wickless candle, add a wick, place it over an open flame, or leave an operating warmer unattended. Keep the warmer and warm wax away from children and pets.

How long does a wickless candle last?

There is no universal hour count. Fragrance fades gradually as you warm the wax; the warmer's heat setting, session length and scent all affect your experience. When the wax no longer gives the fragrance you want, replace the candle. Allow it to cool completely before handling the vessel.

Wickless candles and wax melts: what's the difference?

Both release fragrance when warmed. Our wickless candle is poured into a decorative glass tumbler that sits on a compatible candle warmer. Wax melts are smaller pieces of scented wax used in a warmer designed for melts. Check the instructions for the particular warmer and product rather than placing a glass jar in a melt dish.
