Candles Made In Appalachia
A guide to mountain light, regional craft, and the authentic makers who belong here.
Autumn Laurel & Co. is hand-poured in Christiansburg, Virginia — in the New River Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Every candle in our collection is made in Appalachia, shaped by the specific landscape, seasons, and heritage traditions of Southwest Virginia.
These are not mountain-themed candles. They are candles made in the mountains.

Appalachian Core Collection
The foundation of Autumn Laurel — clean air, worn wood, quiet mornings, and the steady rhythm of life in the Blue Ridge.
- Highland Still — Juniper and botanical gin open bright and sharp, softened by red currant, grounded in balsam, oak, cedar, and cypress. A still mountain morning in old-growth woods.
- Appalachian Sky — Crisp mountain air, soft ozone, and a whisper of wildflower. The first deep breath after stepping outside on a clear Blue Ridge morning.
- Mountain Jubilee — Bright sparkling citrus and fresh fruit — celebratory and energizing, like a summer festival on the town square.
- Berrywood Hollow — Sweet mixed berries softened with warm woods. The holler in full summer, ripe and unhurried.
- Morning Rain — Fresh rain on warm earth, petrichor rising from the ridge. Clean, grounding, and unmistakably Appalachian.
- Woodland Wake — Cedar, damp moss, and morning light filtering through old-growth trees. The forest before anyone else is up.
- Lavender Veil — True lavender with a soft, clean finish. Like lavender growing wild along a mountain fence line.
- Hearth & Holler — Mulled cider, cinnamon bark, and a crackling fire. The scent of every good thing about coming home in October.
- Fancy Tea — Bright, slightly herbaceous black tea with a hint of citrus and soft florals. A proper afternoon pause, Blue Ridge style.

What Makes These Candles Different
Candles made in Appalachia carry something that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate — a specificity of place, a relationship to landscape, and a craft tradition that has been practiced in these mountains for generations.
At Autumn Laurel, that difference shows up in every decision:
- Wax: 100% apricot coconut wax — a premium plant-based blend chosen for its cleaner burn and more atmospheric fragrance throw
- Fragrance: Phthalate-free oils developed around real Blue Ridge landscapes, seasons, and heritage traditions
- Production: Small batches hand-poured in Christiansburg, Virginia — not scaled for throughput, scaled for craft
- Story: Every scent is rooted in a real place, a real season, or a real piece of this region's long and layered history

Rooted in the New River Valley
Autumn Laurel is hand-poured in Christiansburg, Virginia — Montgomery County, New River Valley. The New River is one of the oldest rivers on earth, older than the mountains it carved through. It predates the Appalachians themselves.
That kind of deep, ancient rootedness is part of what this region carries. And it is part of what we pour into every candle.

A Fragrance Approach Rooted in Place
Our approach to scent is straightforward: clean, balanced, and designed to live well in a space.
Rather than overpowering a room, Autumn Laurel candles are built to settle into it — creating atmosphere without excess. Whether you prefer crisp mountain air, grounded woods, wild berries from the holler, or the warm spice of a Blue Ridge autumn, each scent is developed with restraint and intention.
These are candles meant to be lived with. Not noticed. Felt.
How to Choose an Authentic Appalachian Candle
Not every candle that uses Appalachian imagery is made in Appalachia. When choosing, look for:
- A specific location where candles are actually poured — city, county, named region
- Transparent ingredient information including wax type and fragrance sourcing
- Fragrance notes drawn from real regional plant life, seasons, or traditions — not generic "mountain" accords
- Small-batch production with limited availability rather than mass-scale inventory
- A maker with verifiable roots in the region — membership in regional artisan networks, community involvement, a founding story that predates the brand
Autumn Laurel meets every one of these markers. We are proud members of Round the Mountain Southwest Virginia's Artisan Network and the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild, and our candles are available at Junction 245 Marketplace in Buena Vista, Virginia.
Bringing Appalachian Light Into Your Home
You don't have to live in the mountains to feel connected to them.
A candle made in Appalachia brings with it the quiet of old hills, the softness of morning fog, and the steady comfort of a flame meant to last through an evening. That is the heart of this region.
Not spectacle. Presence.
