What Makes a Candle American-Made? Virginia Craftsmanship, Small-Batch Production, and Coconut-Apricot Wax
When people search for American-made candles, they are often looking for more than a label. They want to know where the candle was made, who made it, what materials it uses, and whether the product reflects a real commitment to American craftsmanship.
At Autumn Laurel & Co., our candles are handmade in the USA and hand-poured in Christiansburg, Virginia. Our fragrance stories are rooted in Appalachia, while our production process is grounded in small-batch work, careful testing, and thoughtful attention to the finished candle.
What makes a candle American-made?
“American-made” should describe meaningful production work that takes place in the United States. For our candle line, that means we prepare, pour, finish, label, and package our candles in Virginia.
We also develop the atmosphere and story behind each fragrance here. Our scents are inspired by Appalachian forests, mountain air, orchards, kitchens, folklore, old libraries, and the quiet rituals of home.

Small-batch production in Virginia
Small-batch production gives a candle maker the opportunity to pay attention to details that can disappear in mass production. We consider fragrance balance, vessel size, wick performance, cure time, label presentation, and the experience of lighting the finished candle.
Every batch is part of a larger process of learning and refinement. That does not mean every candle is identical in a factory-made way; it means each candle receives careful attention before it leaves our studio.

Why we use coconut-apricot wax
Our core candle line uses a premium coconut-apricot wax blend. We do not call these soy candles or beeswax candles because those descriptions would be inaccurate. Coconut-apricot wax is part of the way we formulate our candles for a smooth finish, reliable fragrance performance, and an even burn when the candle is properly wicked and cared for.
The wax is only one part of the story. A well-made candle also depends on the vessel, wick, fragrance load, curing time, and responsible burn instructions. We encourage customers to trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch, allow the first melt pool to develop evenly, and burn no longer than four hours at a time.
American-made does not have to mean generic
Many American-made product pages focus on manufacturing location alone. That information matters, but a product can also carry the character of the place where it was made.
Our fragrances are connected to Appalachia: its ridgelines, forests, gardens, kitchens, weather, folklore, and stories. Explore the Appalachian Candles collection for scents that express that regional identity.

How to identify an American-made candle
Look for a brand that clearly identifies its production location, explains its materials honestly, and provides meaningful information about how the candle is made. “American-made” should be supported by transparent details rather than used as a vague decorative phrase.
